Friday Faves: Falling in Love with Fall

We are already halfway into OCTOBER!?  I can't believe it!

This year is flying by and I'm falling more in love with life here in Denver with each passing week.

On a candid note, I've really been enjoying this new "Friday Faves" series.  People always say that journaling the positive things in your life is the best way to curate positive energy and happiness, and right now, I couldn't agree more.  These little entries have given me an opportunity to slow down and appreciate all of the little things in life.  I've been taking time to enjoy all of the blessings around me and truly appreciate some of the "extras" that make life easier.  The results have been astounding.  I'm happier, more thankful of what I have, and have found the ability to differentiate things I LOVE and things I like - annnnd I have the ability to share those things with you, my favorite people!

NEAT AND TIDY

So let's kick off this week's list with a simple pleasure I noticed this past week!  I'm obsessed with our current sink-side decorations.  It might be a small corner, but these details are so special to me.

Up First, the ring holder.  It was a gift from one of my very best friend's the day of my wedding; it was one of the first things I received that had mine and Andrew's initials.  The second is the little terrarium!  For our wedding, Andrew and I decided forgo the traditional candle lighting and create a unique piece of art, by combining two colors of sand, for our new home.  We topped the sand with seashells and air plants!  The last addition to this little corner is some amazing soap from Bath & Bodyworks.  Andrew's mother came for a visit and surprised me with this delicious smelling fall soap!

GIFTING GUIDE

Fall is my favorite season!  The weather is crisp and fresh.  Sweaters, scarves, and boots make fashion headlines.  What could be better?!  It's also the season of BIRTHDAYS.  If you're like me, you know hundreds of September, October, and November babies (including myself and Andrew).  I find myself constantly on the hunt for birthday gifts... mostly for myself, but sometimes others too!  So this section is dedicated to all of your shopping needs:

Starbucks' Pumpkin Spiced Lattes, or "PSLs" as they are more commonly known.  What better gift can you think of than this amazing PSL Sweatshirt from Care Diane?  It's the perfect top to sport during a much needed Netflix marathon of Gilmore Girls.  Add a bottle of wine and you've secured your friendship for the next 20 years.  Head over to Cara Diane and "treat yo'self" -- If you use the code "#NOVICENATIVE" you'll get 20% OFF your order.

Gifting for someone that isn't practically your clone can be hard!  You don't want to get something they'll hate or something that's totally outside their age group, but also don't want to spend eternity trying to find the perfect gift -- I get it!  Look no further than mywalit.   This amazing company is perfect; they have a little something for everyone!  Wether her favorite is classic leather slouch bags or a fun colorful clutch, this company has a piece to fit her style.  I fell in love with this adorable clutch and the bright colors.  The quality is amazing and the leather feels so soft!  You can get your's here: www.mywalit.com

HEALTH

I get why everyone likes to get in shape before summer, but for someone who lives in Denver, fall is the best time to get in shape.  Ski season is just around the corner and winter happens to be our most active time!  With cooling nights come earlier sunsets, which means it harder to fit in that dreaded evening workout.  Instead of killing myself trying to change my eating habits and beginning a workout regimen, I decided to start with one of my favorite health kicks -- JUICING.  If you've followed me for any amount of time, you know I love juices.  This time, I decided to try a new brand of juices: SUJA.  I'm sure you've seen their ads and heard their name, but here's an honest review from someone who loves juice:

Their juice is amazing.  Andrew and I both did the 3-day Fresh Start and really enjoyed the cleanse.  The juices were sweeter than other cleanses I've tried, but so tasty!  It would be the perfect cleanse for someone trying their first juice.  The nutrition facts were on the back of the bottles, which I wasn't sure about at first, but I ended up loving it.  I could really feel a difference between each juice and started to "notice" the difference when it came to caloric intake.  The Blue Dream (purple) juice was hands down my favorite.  ER MAH GOSH -- OBSESSED!  I looked forward to it every night.  If you are looking to get clean and fit this fall, SUJA is the way to go.  Check out their website here!

Choosing A Wedding Dress

Choosing a wedding dress is the biggest decision of your wedding, alongside choosing your venue!  The dress will set the stage for the event theme and and is also something you hold on to for a long time.  You will forever have a photo of you, in your dress, with your husband on your desk/in your house… But you already knew that, right?

With that being said, I’m not going to add to your stress by reminding you how important picking the right one is; instead, I’m going to help you navigate the options and make the process easier!

The first step in picking the perfect dress is to establish a budget.  Getting a dollar value in mind will help narrow down choices and save the heart ache of falling in love with a dress that’s way out of your price range.  You’ll want to consider all the possible extra expenses, such as a belt, veil, jewelry, alterations, a crown (if that’s your style), and even dry cleaning!  All of these thing quickly drive up the price of your purchase!

The next thing you’ll want to do before you prepare for your big shopping day is get an idea of styles of dresses you like!  You can start by browsing magazines, Pinterest, and other wedding blogs to get a sense of your like and dislikes.  Keep in mind while you are browsing, hair styles are a big part of what complete the look for your wedding day, so you’ll want to choose styles that will complement your hair, as well.  For example, a flowy, simple dress may look gorgeous on that model with perfect, long hair all tossed in a flawless, messy braid, but your short bob may not have enough interest to dress up the plain dress.  You’d need a detail necklace or statement earrings to bring that kind of detail to the same look, all of which cost a fortune as you add on details!  It’s not impossible, but spending some time considering all of your options will make the process much easier.

After you’ve settled on a look and have a few ideas in your mind, it’s time to gather your girlfriends and head to the boutique!  I advise researching the store you are booking with before you go.  Check out the lines they carry, their average price portfolio, and if they have seasonal “sample sales.”  The place you purchase from is just as important as the dress itself.  You want to go somewhere that has experienced dress experts, and somewhere they understand your style.  There is nothing worse that walking out in a dress you love, only to be met by someone with completely different taste than you.  It is also infuriating to have an expensive dress (that’s outside your budget) presented to you, only to find out you couldn’t have it, even if you sold your liver!  Moral of the story?  DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BROWSE!

Now that you’ve gathered all of your girlfriends, family, and bridesmaids, it’s time to hit the fitting room!  But what dresses will you try on?  Explaining your look to your representative is vital!  She may let you browse the racks, in addition to pulling a few of her favs for you.  Don’t be hesitant to let her help, she has a lot more experience with dresses being made for different body types.  Also, don’t be shy to try on samples if they are having a sample sale… The dress may have been tried on a thousand times, but it’s 1/3 of the cost and a quick dry clean and alteration will make it brand new, custom fit for you.   Trust me ;) It’s beautiful, eh?

Raise your arms!!  HERE COMES THE DRESS—This is the most exciting part!  It’s the most important part too.  You’re in your first dress… YAY!  You walk out, mom cries, the whole world is revolving around you.  It’s easy to begin to feel overwhelmed, in this moment!  But take a deep breath and bask in it.  It’s your day!  However, take my advice.  Don’t fall in love with the first dress.  Trying on wedding dresses is a different experience; you’ve looked forward to this moment your entire life and no matter what dress you are in, you will feel special.  It takes a few dresses to get used to the idea that they are allllll beautiful dresses.  They are wedding dresses and someone will wear them on the prettiest day of their life.  THAT BEING SAID…. They are not all your wedding dress.

So how do you pick?  My advice?  Try on a hundred dresses.  Take your time.  Love all of them.  (Don’t worry) you’ll hate some too.  But take the time to really process the dresses.  Go to lunch and mull the options over.  I promise…. I had always heard that “when you know, you know.”  I didn’t believe it after trying on a thousand dresses that left me in tears, but believe me when I say… It’s true.  You just know!

Don’t let price, selection, or the sales clerk get you down.  There is 100% a dress made just for you.  You just have to enjoy to journey of finding it!

A Date Night Outfit You Can't Pass Up!

20160510_Leopard 6.jpg

Today on the blog, I’m talking “date night” essentials, all captured by Noah Berg Photography (@noahbergphotography).

With summer just around the corner… finding weather appropriate garments can be difficult if you are trying to stay a little on the modest side.  I’m going to walk you through my thought process and provide a few examples of ways to get that perfect look (demanding respect – yet calling attention!).

This adorable dress would have been typical for a night out on the town in college, and probably alllll I would have worn, but as I have adjusted to life after the party, I’ve grown to love the comfort of not being COLD!

Now before you go calling me “grandma,” let me explain that just because I have befriended the best girlfriend on the earth, Comfort, doesn’t mean I have to lose all feistiness to my outfit.  This look is a clear example of how classy, comfortable, and sassy can all play nicely together.

Let’s talk base layer first… This dress, worn by itself, is super sexy.  It’s tight fitting, rather short, and has amazing lines to accentuate curves.  However, it’s not something I would feel comfortable wearing alone anymore.  Struggling with the desire to look fierce, while trying to stay within one’s comfort zone is a place I would guess many women find themselves… So I found the perfect solution à Layering it with a cute top and pairing it with the perfect accessories.

Since I decided to add to the complexity of this look, I needed to add to the appeal.  The leopard print on the dress, topped with a basic button up was the perfect combination.  It’s conservative, but still fun and flirty.  I chose a very neutral top, but something in style… chambray.  Tying at the waist was a great way to pull attention to the small of my wait, while hiding my big bootie.

Lastly, let’s talk shoes… depending on the person, you can make your shoe selection your own, but for me, the leopard print dress is about as showy as I like to go.  For that reason, I chose a sensible, comfortable small bootie with an open toe.  The heel on this amazing pair of shoes is thick and super reliable over cobblestone walkways.  You pair the babies with a high-end beautiful purse with classic lines and structure, I mean, you’ve got yourself an age appropriate power-suit to rock your date night.

Okay… After re-reading this little overview…. I’m officially an old lady :/  oh well… guess Fitz needs a kitty friend.  #catlady

Finding that Special "Boutique" : 8 Things Every Blogger Should Live By

As a blogger, the best relationship you can hope to build is one with your favorite boutique.  I have been fortunate enough to find that “diamond in the rough” relationship.   This shoot with Whorl Shop Denver is a tribute to that relationship, as I begin to explain to you my blogging evolution.
